Isn't municipal water already treated?

It is, at the plant. What happens afterwards is the building's problem: kilometres of distribution main, the service connection, and the riser. Biofilm grows in that last stretch, and disinfectant residual falls as water sits in low-flow branches. Point-of-entry treatment is the last place a single intervention still covers every occupant.

Why UV rather than chlorine?

UV inactivates chlorine-resistant protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, adds nothing to the water, produces no disinfection by-products, and leaves no taste. It is why municipalities and beverage manufacturers moved to it.

Why UV rather than filtration?

They solve different problems. Filtration removes particulate and, with the right media, chemical contaminants such as PFAS and heavy metals. UV inactivates biology — including viruses small enough to pass filtration entirely. Most buildings need both, and the assessment determines the split.

Does it affect water pressure?

No. Water flows through the chamber and is treated in transit. UV lamps don't have a high energy demand and don't disrupt water flow.

Yes, when it is designed and commissioned properly. Upper-room systems confine the irradiated zone above the occupied plane and are verified on site with irradiance mapping. No — it complements it. Filtration captures particulate; germicidal UV inactivates the biological load that filtration passes or that grows on the coil downstream of it. The assessment determines what each building needs from each.

Marginally, and often less than it saves. Upper-room systems add no resistance to the ventilation system. In-duct treatment keeps cooling coils clean, and a clean coil transfers heat at its design efficiency — fouling is a continuous, invisible energy penalty that this removes.
